Fifth Annual Jim Spruiell Northern Region EM Collaborative
Relias Healthcare hosted its fifth annual Jim Spruiell Northern Region Emergency Medicine Collaborative Thursday, Oct. 24th. The collaborative began in 2016 in an effort to bring EM providers, Nurses, EMT’s and leaders together annually to discuss the environment of Emergency Medicine across hospital & geographical lines. Each year the collaborative presents a renowned speaker on a specific topic. This year the topic was “Compassionomics” -scientific evidence that caring makes a difference. Regional EM providers, Nurses, EMS teams, leaders, and healthcare workers were present, and we are grateful for their attendance.
This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Brian Roberts, a researcher & contributor to the book Compassionomics. He spoke on the unique topic of Compassionomics, the scientific effect of compassion on patients and how it can not only benefit the patient and caregiver, but also help prevent the provider from suffering burnout, a common problem facing our healthcare industry.
Dr. Roberts is a physician- scientist and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in Camden, New Jersey. Dr. Roberts is a practicing board-certified emergency medicine physician, and a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded clinical researcher with more than 40 publications in the scientific literature, primarily in the field of resuscitation science.
In 2017, the collaborative was renamed in memory of Jim Spruiell, a dear friend of Relias Healthcare and a colleague who impacted this region of Emergency Medicine in a way that we would like to honor moving forward. Attendees were given the opportunity to donate to the Jim Spruiell Memorial Scholarship Fund.
We are so thankful for those that took time out of their week to attend this unique collaborative. We hope that all attendees took something away from the collaborative, and will make plans to attend the event next year.
