Emergency Medicine Fellowship

Fully Accredited Fellowship Opportunities

In conjunction with North Mississippi Medical Center – Tupelo, Relias Healthcare supports an emergency medicine fellowship for physicians. The emergency medicine fellowship is accredited by the American Board of Physician Specialties.

Why choose Relias?

Dr. Joseph Johnsey, Relias Chief Medical Officer, and Dr. Val Serio, NMMC-Tupelo Medical Director, saw a need for emergency medicine trained physicians to work in the community hospital emergency department setting. After much thought and planning, in the Fall of 2016 we officially welcomed our first class of physicians to the Relias Healthcare Emergency Medicine Fellowship. The primary goal of this program is to provide an intensive one-year training in emergency medicine to physicians who have completed residencies in other specialties such as: family medicine, internal medicine, or pediatrics.

The fellows work clinical shifts in the North Mississippi Medical Center-Tupelo emergency department and have a weekly, four-hour didactic session. The didactic sessions provide additional education for the fellows in various learning environments. The fellows review case studies, attend core lectures, take board review practice exams, and participate in simulation-based procedure labs.

Upon completion of the fellowship, the fellows are board-eligible in emergency medicine. The physicians can then sit for a written and oral board exam to become board certified in emergency medicine.

Program Details

Clinical Training

The fellows work in the NMMC-Tupelo emergency department. NMMC-Tupelo is a Level 2 trauma center and has a 58-bed emergency department. The fellows work alongside emergency medicine attending physicians while in the department.

Didactic Sessions

Each week there is a four-hour didactic session which includes case presentations, clinical skills labs, core lectures and board review practice exams with discussion.

Simulations

During the first month of the fellowship, the fellows participate in a procedure lab. The procedure lab gives the fellows an opportunity to learn more about commonly performed emergency department procedures.

Relias Healthcare offers other simulation-based training throughout the year which includes an emergent delivery lab, ultrasound lab and a megacode lab. We continually work to provide the fellows with additional learning opportunities in simulation environments.

Journal Club

Twice a year, fellows and physician attendings meet to discuss topics which we may be able to apply to the groups’ clinical practice.

Past topics include:

  • “The use of ketamine in the treatment of acute pain.”
  • “Balanced Crystalloids versus Saline in Acutely Ill Patients”
  • “Contrast-Induced Nephropathy: Monster or Myth?”
